What is the hoop called in basketball?
Knowing the exact lingo can be a difficult one - what to look for or what to search for? Technically speaking the hoop/ring itself is the goal - it's where you put the ball to score points. Just like a football goal in that sense. The metal ring is also referred to as a 'Rim' or 'Net'. The net itself is really that part that hangs from the rim, but this is often used as a collective term for both.
When looking at equipment to play with, the full unit including post/pole/base/baskboard and ring is often called a 'Basketball Hoop', 'Basketball Stand' or 'Basketball Unit'. A wall-mounted backboard is the afforementioned but without the base and pole. You attach it directly to the wall. We go into much more detail about all the parts in our full buying guide.

What basketball hoop should I buy?
Buying a new bit of kit for your home can sometimes be a minefield. We have been in the game for a long time so allow us to walk you through the basics. Don't forget to also take a look through the buying guide as this will give you some mor etechnical information on the different parts of the various types of equipment.

Official NBA Height Systems
Bee Ball offers official NBA height stands with regulation size hoops across the board. All Bee-Ball systems have the option of easily adjusting to a lower height for younger players, so the stands can grow with the players. Check each product specification to see the lowest and highest heights they reach. There are also smaller preschool systems, starting at 1.6m. It is always useful to have an adjustable stand if your children are going to grow significantly, or you have a range of ages who are likely to use the net. Our portable hoops include wheels so they can be moved or stored easily.

Space Saving Wall Mounted Backboards
If you have limited space, a wall-mounted basketball backboard could be the ideal option. Designed to be mounted onto a wall these units are much smaller than the stands but still offer the same functionality. These are great for any age range; mount them at any height and move it up the wall as your children get older. We would usually recommend setting the rim at a height of 2.75 - 3.05m if you don’t like the idea of moving it at a later stage. Junior basketball teams play at 2.75m and professional players at 3.05m - so this must be the maximum height to place your basketball ring.

Firstly size does matter here - the balls are sold in size 5-7 depending on the ball. Not all balls are available in all sizes, so decide what size you need first of all. If you aren't sure, head to any of our hoop pages as there's a ball size guide on each one.
