Frequently Asked Questions
Does this outdoor mud kitchen have functional water features?
Yes, it includes a real working water system. The Big Game Hunters mud kitchen is equipped with a refillable water dispenser (tank) and a working tap. Additionally, it features a connection point for a standard hosepipe, allowing for continuous water flow. This turns the unit into a fully functioning outdoor mud kitchen, perfect for mixing ingredients without constant trips to the indoor tap.
How long does assembly take and are the holes pre-drilled?
Assembly typically takes 1–4 hours, and essential holes are pre-drilled. We have designed this wooden mud kitchen to be easier to build than a DIY mud kitchen or pallet project. While it is a large item, we provide clear instructions and numbered parts. Most structural holes are pre-drilled, though some customers find it helpful to pilot a few small extra holes to make screwing into the solid wood even smoother.
Does the kitchen include a sink and a sliding worktop?
Yes, it comes with a removable sink bowl and an extendable work surface. Each model includes a durable mud kitchen sink (stainless steel or high-grade plastic) that is easy to remove for cleaning. Many of our premium models, such as the Triple, also feature a clever sliding wooden cover. This acts as a lid for the sink or slides across to create an extra preparation area, maximizing the space for mud kitchen toys and mixing.
Is the wood treated and suitable for garden use?
It arrives with a basic treatment, but we recommend adding a preservative. To ensure this remains the highlight of your garden mud kitchen area for years, we highly recommend painting or varnishing the timber before assembly. While the fir wood is heat-treated for initial protection, a coat of wood preservative will protect it against the weather, preventing rot and keeping it looking fresh.
Is this mud kitchen sturdy enough for heavy play?
Yes, it is built to be extremely solid and robust. Once built, the Big Game Hunters mud kitchen is far sturdier than a standard homemade mud kitchen. It is designed to withstand vigorous stirring, chopping, and "cooking" by energetic children. Its weight ensures it won't tip easily, making it a safe and reliable choice for both home gardens and mud kitchens for schools.
Is the Triple Mud Kitchen suitable for multiple children?
Yes, the "Triple" size offers plenty of room for 2–3 children. Social play is a huge benefit of a children's mud kitchen. The extended length ensures that siblings or friends can play simultaneously—one washing at the sink, one cooking at the hob, and one prepping mud pies—without arguing over space.
Does it have storage for pots and mud kitchen accessories?
Yes, it features generous cupboards and shelving. Organization is key. Our kitchens are designed with cupboards (complete with doors) and lower shelves specifically for storing mud kitchen accessories, pots, pans, and ingredients. This allows children to pack away their "kitchen" after playtime, keeping the garden tidy.
What age group is this kitchen designed for?
It is ideal for ages 2 to 7 (Toddlers to Young Primary). The worktop height is carefully calibrated to be accessible for toddlers engaging in early sensory play, while still being high enough for primary school children to enjoy role-playing. It supports development from simple texture exploration to complex "restaurant" scenarios.
How do mud kitchens support sensory play compared to other toys?
They offer unmatched tactile and imaginative development. Unlike static toys, a mud kitchen outdoor setup encourages messy, open-ended play. Handling mud, water, leaves, and stones improves fine motor skills and sensory processing. It is a creative "blank slate" that encourages communication, math (measuring ingredients), and scientific curiosity.
Why buy a Big Game Hunters kitchen instead of building a DIY mud kitchen?
We offer safety, convenience, and professional finishing. Building a DIY mud kitchen from pallets can be cheap, but often results in splinters, rough edges, and hours of labor. A Big Game Hunters mud kitchen provides smooth, planed wood, safety-tested components, and professional features like oven knobs and water dispensers right out of the box, saving you time and ensuring a safe play environment.
