Beach Sports and Games

The seaside can be a great setting for loads of different outdoor games. Try your hand at some beach sports. Here are some of our favourites:

Throwing Games

Frisbee

Always a classic, especially for those that have dogs! Standing with your feet at a 90 degree angle in a side-on stance to the target and then retracting it across you body will generate a lot more power and distance. See how far you can throw the frisbee and the work on improving your power.

Beach Volleyball

You might get lucky and arrive at a beach with a special beach volleyball court. However if there isn’t one available then simply mark out a line in the sand and have two teams stand on either side of it. You can learn more about the rules here.

Rounders/Softball

Going back to your school days; rounders is a classic game. Playing it on the beach has the added caveat of it being a bit harder to run round the bases as the sand will slow you down. We have a beautiful wooden rounders set which comes in a sturdy blue canvas bag. Perfect for taking to the beach for this reason (click on the image below). You will need a larger group of people to play, but you can always do batting practise with just one bowler and one batter. If you only have a couple of people you can decrease the number of bases to suit.

Rope/ Balance Games

Jump rope

Make sure you’ve got a sufficiently long enough rope and then you can have two people holding it at opposite ends with one person jumping in the middle. The sand, heat in addition to hard work of jumping makes this into great exercise! Make sure you stay hydrated and don’t overheat because you don't want to get feel ill!

Tug of war

You can use the same rope to play a game of tug of war on the beach. Organise the teams to evenly distribute strength on either side to thus making competition fair!

Limbo

Another great game when played at the beach as it’s a bit softer falling on to the sand if you can’t quite get down low enough! You can do this just using a long stick or branch held up by two people. We also have a set available that people tend to use in the garden which will work amazingly at the beach, you can have a look here.

Fun Beach Activities

If these games don't quite fill your day then there are plenty of other things you can do at the beach. Have a look at some of our favourites below.

Building Sand Castles

This is one of the most obvious beach activities because its always a fun way to play in the sand and allow kids to expressive their creative skills. They don't even need to be limited to sand castles - try a boat, a car, a fort, an army trench or giant sand animals. It depends on what your children are into so choose something that will spark their interest.

Water Pistol Fights

You can pick up water pistols fairly inexpensively. This is sure to keep the more boisterous children entertained for some time. Just try not to drench too many other beach goers!

Swimming & Paddling

Make the most of being at the seaside and cool off by going for a dip in the sea. If you have little ones with you it can be a great idea to build a paddling pool near where you are camped out. Get your spades out and dig a channel from the sea up to where you are sat. Then dig a small paddling pool into the sand. When the waves roll up the beach, this should fill the channel and the paddling pool. This can be an easy and much safer way for the littles ones to paddle and play in the water.

Buckets and containers are also very useful for them as they can fill them up and pour the water out - adding to the length of time they will be interested in tis activity.

Ice cream

What trip to the seaside would be complete without indulging in your kids' favourite ice cold treat. Just make sure they eat it before it melts and runs down their hands.

We love this ice lolly hack - just a simple cup cake case round the bottom and hey presto - a lot less lolly mess (try saying that 5 times quickly)!

Beach games for kids are a great way to make the most of your time at the seaside. With so many fun and easy games to choose from, there is something for everyone to enjoy. So next time you're planning a beach trip, be sure to pack some beach games for the kids.
